I have a Logitech G15 keyboard with a built in LCD. It has an RSS ticker feature. That updates every couple seconds. It is easy to create any Sub Reddit into an RSS feed by adding, ".rss" at the end of any Sub Reddit address. Fundamental analysis: where do you get your Coin-related news from?
Being the first to learn about a critical piece of information just released is crucial to anticipate an imminent increase of drop of the market, and open positions accordingly. We had a great example of this last week with the arrest of the Bitinstant CEO and subsequent market drop. Those who heard about it early were able to open short positions that resulted in a nice profit. In your experience: what are the best, fastest, most reliable sources of information out there? Which ones do you use? Twitter? Troll-boxes? IRC? Dedicated websites? Thank you.
100% Bitcoin tech magazine with no price speculation - contributions welcome
Hi All, I have worked restlessly for months to put together http://bitcointechweekly.com, a tech magazine exclusively focused on Bitcoin. It is mainly dedicated to new developers and technical people and does not include any price speculation or ads and offers an RSS feed. I started diving into bitcoin technology last year and I missed having a news source that would give me in glimpse all updates on Bitcoin related technology without having to scroll through tons of click bait content and price speculation. Before starting this project there was no such source of news as the vast majority of good quality tech articles were posted on personal blogs, while the most popular crypto blogs and magazines include price talk, ICOs and such with tons of ads. I thought it was relevant to share here and would appreciate any feedback. We also have a Matrix room where you can leave your feedback or contributions. EDIT: There is now a newsletter available here
PSA: The flood of "Major companies (ATT, AMZN) accepting BTC" posts are misleading. DYOR.
TLDR Below. Ladies and Fellas, For the past several weeks, Reddit has been bombarded with ads from various "crypto news sources" claiming that companies like ATT and Amazon (Whole Foods) now accept Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency as forms of payment. The dream has come true! Or has it? The method and message these processors are communicating to us is tremendously false and misleading: First of all, it is important to know that many of these "Crypto News Sites" are pay for play. The articles are written up by special interests (a wallet, a company, etc.), a fee is paid to the "news website," and the article is then posted as news on their feed. It can then appear in the apps we use to track coin prices, RSS feeds, and other avenues of access to the general public under what people assume is "news." These posts are expensive, which explains the massive shill effort taking place. Now, lets use Bitpay as an example as they have been among the most prevalent in this practice and the most aggressive that I have personally conversed with. Bitpay is a payment processor, similar to Visa or MasterCard, however Bitpay specifically allows payments in Cryptocurrency, in conjunction with whatever else they offer. When the shillers tell you that ATT or Whole Foods will provide you with a QR code and you send payment to them, the payment address actually belongs to Bitpay, who for a small fee then converts your Bitcoin / Cryptocurrency to fiat and pays the major company in fiat. At no point does ATT, Amazon, or any of these large companies actually handle your Bitcoin. They do not accept Bitcoin or Cryptocurrency at all. The processor does, and these processors are trying to make it seem as if the major retailers do. That is what really grinds my gears. Many of us are looking forward to the day that OUR actual Bitcoin will be accepted as payment because this act not only validates one of many use cases for Bitcoin, but also signifies a real world functionality for our wallets - introducing a much larger scale of adoption and societal acceptance. These "fake news" sites and posts mislead us to believe that this time has come. It has not. Hopefully one day, but like Arya said "not today." At no point do any of these companies handle or even deal with Bitcoin or Cryptocurrency. Yes, technically, you can send your Bitcoin to an address and have your bill or statement paid off, but it is not via actual Bitcoin acceptance by one of these major companies. It is via a payment processor who will most likely charge you a small fee (on top of marginalizing the conversion price by a few %) for converting your Bitcoin to fiat and then paying off your bill in fiat. The simple fact that these companies have been trying so hard to make us believe that our Bitcoin is accepted in the manner which they are should be a red flag in and of itself! Some people may not mind, saying "cool, I can send my Bitcoin to an address and my balance with a major company will be marked as paid." Thats your business and your freedom to do what you want with your $. Others like myself, feel like these processors are communicating false information making it seem like Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency are accepted at 100's of major retailers when in fact fiat is the only thing they do and ever have accepted. This campaign is a grey area lie (for lack of a better term) and it is misleading and untrue. Be careful and DYOR. TL/DR: The past few weeks, various post have flooded this space claiming Fortune 500 companies and major retailers now accept Bitcoin. They do not and this is a deceiving and misleading statement. ATT and Amazon accept fiat, and these shady processors are trying to fool us into thinking major retailers accept Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency. They accept fiat only at this point. The processors accept our BTC, convert it to fiat, and pay the retailers in fiat. There is no translational increase in adoption or social awareness by any major retailer. Don't get fooled. DYOR.
Hey everyone! I've been hard at work on Splunk Lab these last few months, and I wanted to share what I've done with it. The first thing is that I baked in several Splunk apps so that they are all available when launching the app! That list includes:
A bunch of the above endpoints are actually built into Splunk Lab, so once it is running, you can go into "Inputs" in Splunk and start pulling data down with just a few clicks. To get started with Splunk Lab, make sure you have Docker running, and run this on the command line:
Just an idea but I think it would be awesome to have the bitcoin exchange rate on this subreddit. Once everyday I check the exchange rate and this subreddit to get infos about Bitcoin, if I could do everything on the same website well, that would be great ! :)
Educate Yourself - My Top Picks for news sources, YouTube channels, and podcasts
Why do I need to know what is going on in the world of cryptocurrency and blockchain? I'm just here to trade and make money. I saw someone post a couple of days ago about how they have held Ethereum for a while, but had recently "done some research" and discovered that Ethereum was Turing complete and that "surely this must be one of Ethereum's most important features." At that moment, I realized how many people who post here have no idea what the hell they are talking about. If this post can help us become collectively smarter and more informed, and thereby elevate the quality of the discussion in this community, then it will have served its purpose. If you want to get smart on any topic, you need to learn and keep learning from others who are knowledgeable. Things evolve incredibly quickly in the world of crypto and it is very easy to fall out of the loop on the latest happenings. Since most of you have money on the line (in the form of ETH holdings), that should be all of the incentive you need to stay informed. Every effective traditional investor I have ever met researches the hell out of every stock they buy (before they buy it), but also keeps in the know on every major development that company and its competitors have. This is doubly important in the world of crypto where markets can move much faster and the potential for scams and major disruption are much higher. But what about ethtrader? Can't I just get all of my news here? Getting all your news from ethtrader (especially the Daily) is like getting all of your news while standing in line at the grocery store, talking to other people who are reading the National Enquirer. Sure, you may happen upon a useful tidbit of knowledge, but you may also get wrong info that leads you to make bad decisions if you are not informed. But one thing is for sure: it is entertaining. My Top 5 News Source Picks There is no TL;DR for developing real wisdom and insight. Start reading full articles on a regular basis for topics related to crypto/blockchain. At a minimum, put the sites below into a folder on your browser's bookmarks tab and open them daily. Or get an RSS reader and make sure you methodically read every single article that comes out on these sites. Newsify is a great RSS reader for iOS users. For either iOS or Android, you could check out Feedly.
/ethereum (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced) - ethereum tends to have more dev focused content. It also tends to highlight big events in the world of Ethereum, ranging from official announcements to the new adoption of Ethereum in the real world.
ETHNews (Intermediate, Advanced) - Probably the best source for all-around Ethereum news. Focuses quite a bit on Ethereum adoption around the world.
Bitcoin Magazine (Intermediate, Advanced) - Focuses on Bitcoin, but covers many other topics related to crypto. Excellent writing and journalism quality. Fun fact: Vitalik Buterin was a co-founder Bitcoin Magazine.
CoinDesk (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced) - This is the closest thing crypto has to a news site that feels more "mainstream." The quality of reporting has actually gotten a lot better here in recent months. If you haven't checked it out for a while, I recommend you do so.
Coin Telegraph (Beginner, Intermediate) - Honestly, you would probably be just fine with four news sources above- most of what CoinTelegraph covers is covered better on those sites. CoinTelegraph feels a bit juvenile, with their journalism and writing quality often leaving something to be desired. But occasionally, you'll find a diamond in the rough when they break a big story first.
Honorable Mentions: You may also want to check out TrustNodes, but their content feels a bit more editorial-ish. There are also many great posts from devs on Medium. Sign up for an account and they'll start e-mailing you some good picks based upon your reading history. My Top 5 YouTube Channel Picks Honestly, there are so many YouTube channels these days, I can't keep up with them. I'll often watch the suggested content from YouTube as a way to discover new vloggers.
The Cryptoverse (Beginner, Intermediate) - Short and well done discussion of daily crypto news and markets from a generally likable guy. Spends a bit too much time talking about shit coins on occasion for my taste, but this is easy to overlook. He is based out of the UK and posts pretty early in the morning for US viewers.
Crypt0 (Beginner, Intermediate) - Omar is a great and engaging host who is very passionate about crypto. Good for daily news and editorial perspectives. Sometimes gets a little long winded, but that's part of his charm.
Ivan on Tech (Beginner, Intermediate) - I really enjoy this channel. Ivan works as a software developer and does a great job of explaining pretty complex blockchain topics for the layperson. Each episode typically focuses on just a couple of topics and analyzes them pretty rigorously.
The Node Investor (Intermediate, Advanced) - Probably one of the best technical analysis channels out there. I don't really trade myself, but I enjoy watching this channel anyway.
BoxMining (Beginner) - If you have time for a fifth, BoxMining is a good choice. He delivers information in a fairly easy to understand way, but what I really like is his China coverage (he's based out of Hong Kong). Outside of that, his analysis and editorial comments aren't really anything to write home about.
Honorable Mentions: Love him or hate him, you can't ignore Andreas...good for quick hits on crypto-philosophy. Real Crypto recently caught my attention as well, with excellent quality TA. Chris Dunn is also very well-established and solid for TA. DataDash is also very informative for ICO analysis and TA. I also like MrYukonC, who is a mod here and talks about topics from this sub on occasion. He only posts when he has something to say (which is fairly episodically), but I think that is a good thing. My Top 3 Podcast Picks I only have time to listen to so many podcasts, but here are the three that I listen to on a regular basis.
Epicenter (Intermediate, Advanced) - Probably one of the deepest and best podcasts in the blockchain space. They don't really discuss price / markets, but instead focus on blockchain fundamentals. They frequently get the biggest name guests, including major project leads, hot ICO founders, and others from the legal/regulator and business world. They often get a little technical, but the information is very good. If you are brand new to blockchain, you may find this podcast a bit hard to follow at first, but its worth it to stick with it. Be sure to listen to their library of old episodes as there are many good insights in them (including a few with Vitalik Buterin).
Neocash Radio (Beginner, Intermediate) - Great mix of news and market coverage, released weekly. Very easy to listen to with a relaxed, conversational style.
Unchained (Beginner, Intermediate) - This is Forbes' podcast on blockchain. It's designed to be more accessible for beginners. More informed folks may find it a bit basic.
Honorable Mention: Many folks also mentioned that they like the Ether Review, which I also listen to when the topic is of interest. That's it. Hope you all found that helpful. If you have any information sources you'd recommend, please share them! EDIT: Made a few corrections and added two additional sources I left out initially.

I created a website where Bitcoin traders and investors could go to get easy access to datasets and trading tools. This platform would be tailored to folks who prefer to do analysis within spreadsheets such as Excel and Google Sheets.
https://spreadstreet.io My name is John, and back in February of this year I started working on a website where Bitcoin traders and investors could go to get easy access to datasets and trading tools (such as technical analysis templates). This platform would require no coding knowledge, and would be tailored to folks who prefer to do analysis within spreadsheets such as Excel and Google Sheets. Quick About Me I am a former Fortune 500 financial analyst, where I managed two $3 billion portfolios. I've been investing/trading since 2002/2003. If you take a look at my kindle cloud reader, you will see over 100 books dedicated to trading and investing of all sorts - technical analysis, fundamental analysis, daily options trading strategies, value investing, volatility trading, quantitative trading, algorithmic trading, and bullshit trading. I think Bitcoin and crypto is the future, and I believe that it is on an unstoppable path. My ultimate goal is to become a cost-leader in the field, and be tailored towards the individual investor. You shouldn't have to pay hundreds to thousands of dollars for top-notch tools. Features at a Glance
Currently over 500+ datasets, and more being added every week (see below for full list)
Spreadsheet based trading templates (currently technical analysis, will expand to other areas in the future)

Right now I have a hard time finding time to work on this project (it's only me working on it). I spent about one and a half month working on it. I'm a frontend developer trying to become a fullstack developer so it has been a good project to earn some learning experience. One idea I had was that I would launch a proposal to fund development using Politeia or maybe if the Decred developers want to fund it. If this would be the case I would work on this full time. Right now I'm paying all the hosting myself and I will keep it running as long as I can and work on it as soon as I have any time. I have a lot of ideas I want to implement but not enough money and time sadly! It is far from finished but I decided to put out what I have done thus far to see if there was any interests in it. The hosting situation is not that good and the site isn't optimized at all, so it might be awfully slow or broken from time to time. Please leave a comment about what you think about the site!
Once in Raspi-config there are a few steps. You'll need to 1) expand the file system, 2) enable SSH, 3) auto boot to desktop and 4) change the internationalisation options. I left the account as pi for mine since this will only be a local device with no outside access. However, most places recommend you change the account/password from default for security reasons.
OPTIONAL: I found for the monitor I used, I had to enable overscan in order for the image to fill the screen.
STRONGLY ENCOURAGED: It's probably best to set a static IP address for the Pi. You have two options to do this. You can either set a dhcp reservation on the router or modify the /etc/network/interfaces file on the Pi itself. In ther interfaces file, you'll need to modify the line that says:
iface eth0 inet dhcp
to something like the below (with the data filled out). A good set of instructions are here:
You will need a program called unclutter to remove the mouse cursor during the display
sudo apt-get install unclutter
At this point, you will want to disable the screen saver. Head to /etc/xdg/lxsession/LXDE-pi/autostart and you'll want to comment out (add a #) to the line that says
and you'll want to add these lines to the bottom of the file
@xset s off @xset -dpms @xset s noblank @sed -i 's/"exited_cleanly": false/"exited_cleanly": true/' ~/.config/chromium-browseDefault/Preferences
OPTIONAL: I decided to have my Pi turn on/off the hdmi on a regular schedule (I don't need the dashboard during the night hours). Follow this guide to create the files. He has the path to where the files are to be saved at the top of each file. Modify the /etc/cron.d/raspi-monitor-scheduler to your preferences. I have mine turn on at 6am, off at 8:30am, on at 5pm, and off at 11pm during the weekdays.
Create a folder in your home pi directory for the html files for your dashboard.
sudo mkdir /home/pi/html/
Finally create a new desktop file to tell the Pi to automatically load Chromium upon boot:
IMPORTANT: I pointed Chromium to load a file that I called Dashboard.html. It's your call on what you want to name the file, but make sure you point it to the right one.
Step 2: Set up the HTML File to Display
This is entirely your choice to what you want to display (and how). I included a calendar, news widget, stock ticker, to do list, traffic, and weather. There are a lot of ways to do this, and I'd even encourage borrowing from the magic mirror project. But, I'll provide links for my approach.
I built it as a main page (Dashboard.html) with the page elements being pulled through via iframes. I found it easier to align and space things this way since I was combining so many different elements.
I only added a few elements in the html heading to add a background image (vs. white) and to have the webpage "auto-refresh". Since I am only interacting via ssh, it was easier than writing a script to hit f5 or leaving the page completely static.
My Folder structure looks like
Background.png - I used this as my background. I just searched for something that I liked that is 1920 x 1080.
News - I used Feed Grabbr for my news feed. Their service is free if you have 1 widget with <3 RSS feeds. My minor gripes is that they only refresh every 9h for the free service (which, frankly, is totally fair) and its only one format unless you pay (again, totally fair).
Map - I used Google Maps to show a local map with traffic. The most difficult process here is that you need to create an API key to pull the data. As long as you have 25k requests/day or less, the service is free.
Stocks - I used Trading View for coming up with a stock widget. I used a single tab with a few stocks that I follow (+ the VIX, S&P 500, and the 10yr Treasury). It seems to have a fairly comprehensive reach of data (from FRED, to bitcoin, to futures/forex). I personally ignored the chart since I won't be interacting with the board.
To Do - I used FeedWind to come up with a short RSS widget that pulls in my to do list from Remember the Milk. I decided on this one since it was free and fairly customizable.
Weather - I decided to use Forecast.io for a weather widget.
Calendar - I used this link for a google calendar embed. Personally, I took off everything but the time zone in the headings. I really don't like the "baby blue" and am looking at replacing this one next.
To wrap it up, my html code looks like the below. I fiddled with the sizing, but I'm sure someone can come up with a more elegant solution.

FINAL Comments. This project probably took me 1h to set up the pi. And 4ish hours stumbling around to get the dashboard set up. My only real outlay was a monitor mount and a new monitor. Best of luck! EDIT Here is the link for the current version of the dashboard. I removed the traffic for the weekend, but this is the dashboard. I have some formatting I really want to do (headings et al), but this should be a decent start. I have also included the color scheme I used.
Finally... Don't forget to set a STOPtriggered at STOP, then executed at market price or LIMITtriggered and executed at LIMIT price if you are on an exchange. If you are on Coinbase, it is trivial to migrate to GDAX to accomplish this. Then sit back! Or be geeky if you have the time and create a bot using a combination of exchange API's and RSS feeds... BTW, have you ever visited COIN's website? Not that it particularly matters, but it's pretty useless... I would have made it the centerpiece of the action... anyway...
In August of 2016, a group calling itself the Shadow Brokers emerged with a treasure trove of purported NSA hacking tools. The group released only a small portion of its take and eventually tried unsuccessfully to auction the good stuff. When no one offered to pay, Shadow Brokers decided to give it away for free. In an enterprise setting, however, disabling the Windows Firewall and allowing remote desktop connections is quite common. That's where these exploits were designed to work, and the Shadow Brokers data appears to reveal that the NSA used these tools against at least one eyebrow-raising target: a SWIFT bureau in the Middle East.
Following The Money
As part of the Bush administration's War on Terrorism the Terrorist Finance Tracking program was set up. Under TFTP, the U.S. gained the ability to monitor transactions carried out via SWIFT. Why target SWIFT specifically? There are upwards of 11,000 banks in 200 countries that use it, and they exchange around 15 million messages a day. If you need to keep an eye on large amounts of money moving internationally, SWIFT is the key.
A leaked PowerPoint slide appears to confirm that the NSA had successfully set up backdoor monitoring on 9 banks running SWIFT Alliance Access (SAA) servers. At least three others at another SWIFT Bureau were targeted, but they had not been compromised at the time of creation of the PowerPoint presentation in 2013.
Large multinational companies are the prime targets of Business Email Compromise (BEC), which is a type of online scam that usually begins with an attacker compromising a legitimate email account and tricking the company’s financial officer to wire funds to their accounts. Typically the companies that fall victim to these scams deal with foreign suppliers and habitually use wire transfer payments. Victims of BEC scams have increased 270% since the start of 2015, and this year saw one of the largest amounts lost by an enterprise. Read more
The Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) is a global transaction messaging network used by banks and other financial entities such as foreign exchanges and investment firms. Unfortunately, this year saw attackers targeting SWIFT clients, compromising and manipulating organizations into sending fraudulent money transfer requests. It’s unclear how many of these attacks were actually successful, but in June, SWIFT sent its clients a letter warning them about the possible dangers. The organization also urged clients to update their software and tighten their cyber defenses.
The post includes a link to a selection of files and folders. One sub-folder called "exploits" includes executable files with apparent codenames such as "Eternalsynergy," "Erraticgopher," and "Emeraldthread."
"This is phenomenal data, it has all the hallmarks of slickly produced internal attack tools," Hacker Fantastic continued. "I am certain that analysis on this data will turn up another 0day [zero day]." Security architect Kevin Beaumont told Motherboard in a Twitter direct message, "All of the Windows implants are new to VirusTotal [an online file scanning tool], which suggests they've not been seen before."
New details about a second attack involving Swift — the messaging system used by thousands of banks and companies to move money around the world — are emerging as investigators are still trying to solve the $81 million heist from the central bank of Bangladesh in February. In that theft, the attackers were able to compel the Federal Reserve Bank of New York to move money to accounts in the Philippines. The second attack involves a commercial bank, which Swift declined to identify. But in a letter Swift plans to share with its users on Friday, the messaging network warned that the two attacks bore numerous similarities and were very likely part of a “wider and highly adaptive campaign targeting banks.”
Evidence is emerging that the SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecom) attacks began as far back as October 2015 when the Philippines bank was first hit, two months prior to the discovery of the failed attack on Tien Phong Bank in Vietnam.
There are many more articles beyond these, but what it looks like is the Shadow Brokers or some associated individuals pulled off a series of bank heists prior to releasing the applications to the open market. That also open the question of what the NSA was doing with the applications? They could have have been tracking "suspects" but it seems they could have also been moving money for any reason they chose without records being left in the banking system. The possible exploits were only exposed after a series of bank robberies exposed the power of the tools the NSA had developed. It seems once again crimes have exposed the government's illicit powers concealed by the intelligence community (IC). It is entirely possible that the tools were used legally and only to expose private records of terrorists and spies under FISA warrants, but who knows. The only thing that exposed these exploits was the theft. Kinda makes ya wonder, huh? The evidence and the different styles of hacking listed in the articles about the bank heists suggests that an initial group stole some NSA hacking tools and pulled off the Bangladesh heist. They may or may not have done Ecuador or the Philippines but it seems that at some point the exploits were sold on the open market, but that does not exclude some clandestine deals with other groups that also have employed the exploits. Once the initial 81 million was stolen they distributed the exploits to other groups who may have also attacked the SWIFT system and other targets to make forensics on nation state level zero day attacks that much more difficult. Several groups attempting independent attacks increased the attack vectors making identification even more difficult. It also appears that the hackers may have targeted banks that had the Trojans installed initially. So why would they go for relatively small scores when they essentially owned the SWIFT system. Could the hackers be attacking networks already infected with the Trojan. It really makes sense when you think about the banks they hit. The NSA installs the Trojans to "observe" suspected transactions. The hackers obtain the exploits, found the Trojans phoning home and used them to own the infected systems, modified the attack vectors to transfer money. Why not skip the phishing attack when there was already infected banks. Take the path of least resistance that leads back to someone the American government would never admit lead away from the hackers. Of course that means anyone including the IC could have manipulated transactions, but hey that wouldn't have been a robbery would it. Really the tools could have been used to track transactions, but they could have facilitated the IC surreptitious movement of money to fund operations. In all reality it was very clever, make a score, don't get greedy, prevent the creation of a M.O. to narrow investigations and identify the perpetrators. But identifying clever when they managed to steal exploits from the NSA and could use the exploits to attack the banking system. Just the fact that they can't be identified means they are pretty slick and the exploits are not for the novice user. There were some skills at work here. What else was done with the exploits and who are they? Shadow Brokers Group Releases More Stolen NSA Hacking Tools & Exploits Saturday, April 08, 2017
Besides dumping some NSA's hacking tools back in August 2016, the Shadow Brokers also released an encrypted cache of files containing more NSA's hacking tools and exploits in an auction, asking for 1 Million Bitcoins (around $568 Million). However, after failed auction, the group put up those hacking tools and exploits for direct sale on an underground website, categorizing them into a type — like "exploits," "Trojans," and "implant" — each of which ranged from 1 to 100 Bitcoins (from $780 to $78,000). Now, the Shadow Brokers has finally released password for the encrypted cache of NSA's files, allowing anyone to unlock and download the auction data dump.
